Trader Joe's Peppermint Joe Joe's Ice Cream

Kyle and I made a trip to Trader Joe's last week specifically to pick up ice cream.  Being obsessed with peppermint ice cream, I obviously snagged a quart of the Peppermint Joe Joe's Ice Cream.  This is described as

We believe that you can never have enough ice cream, so we blended two flavors together in our Peppermint Joe-Joe's Ice Cream. One portion consists of rich and creamy vanilla ice cream mixed with our signature Candy Cane Joe-Joe's cookie chunks.  The other portion consists of peppermint ice cream swirled with dark chocolate fudge.  Together thees two flavors make one memorable holiday ice cream.

I was really excited about the concept of mixing two different but complementary peppermint ice creams together; it's a new twist on peppermint that I hadn't seen before.

The peppermint half was a little disappointing.  The peppermint base was so-so, about what you would expect from a mid-range peppermint ice cream.  The dark chocolate fudge seemed neither dark chocolate-y nor fudge-y to me.  It basically tasted like Hershey's chocolate syrup.  Nothing wrong with that, but call a spade a spade!

The so-so peppermint ice cream and fudge swirl.

The vanilla half of the ice cream was stellar, and managed to save the flavor.  There were so many cookie chunks that this was less a vanilla ice cream and more a cookies and cream ice cream.  The peppermint ice cream managed to infuse the vanilla with just a hint of mintiness.   The subtlety was nice.  The real standout here were the Candy Cane Joe-Joe's.  These are basically Trader Joe's version of the Oreo, but with bits of peppermint candy in the creme.  I think these puppies might have been chocolate covered as well.  What was particularly awesome was that the cookies were just plopped into the ice cream whole! I don't think I got a picture, but it was really fun to excavate the cookies, and they were very delicious.

I wish this ice cream was just the vanilla half and didn't include the peppermint half, but the vanilla half was so good that I'm definitely glad I tried the flavor.
