Oberweis Blueberry Pie

Image
Last week, I was hanging in St. Louis, but I was pretty lazy on the ice cream front. Instead of going to any scoop shops, I just checked out my local Dierberg's to see what flavors they had. Luckily, Dierberg's has a lot of exciting brands and flavors, so you do get one exciting review. I went over there with my mom and she really wanted me to get Oberweis ice cream since they are a brand only sold in certain areas of the midwest, including Missouri and Illinois. I am not sure if you can get Oberweis in Iowa, but I don't think I have ever seen the brand around. However, I don't usually think of Oberweis as having any unique flavors, so I wasn't too keen on picking up a pint when Dierberg's also has Steve's and McConnell's and such. That is until my mom pointed out the Blueberry Pie flavor and the fact that Oberweis was on sale for 2 pints for $8 or one for $4. You can see a couple of pie crust pieces peeking out! And boy oh boy, I am glad I...

Heyn's Pumpkin Pie and Cinnamon

Image
Okay, fine. I'll admit it. It is fall.  I was trying to avoid admitting it, but I can't any longer. But plz lets not talk about winter yet. Now, I know I sound a bit curmudgeony. However, I do not dislike fall. In fact, I think fall is great. Perfect running weather, sweaters, beautiful foliage, an excuse to use the word foliage. Fall is wonderful.   However , what I don't like is this new craze as of the last 5 years or so where people have become extra obsessed with fall. And I don't even mind all of the social media googoogaga-ness about fall. What bugs me is this: (1) Other seasons are fun, too and (2) where was all of this love for fall 10 years ago? Fall as been around for a while, and I feel bad it hasn't gotten this kind of love until recently. Like, do you only love fall because some white dude finally figured out pumpkin and spice taste great in many forms? Which by the way many other peoples have had figure out for a while now . (Sorry, not sorry my blog ...

Sam's Choice Blackberry Crumble

Image
Today I have a review of Sam's Choice Blackberry Crumble.  Sam's Choice is a Wal-Mart brand so obviously only available at Wal-Mart.  After really enjoying the Coffee and Donuts flavor last year, I have been meaning to go try out some other flavors in the line, but am just now getting around to it. Blackberry Crumble is described as Blackberry ice cream with Pie Crust Pieces and Blackberry Ripple. The blackberry base was very good.  Actual blackberries can be pretty tart and in-your-face, but this base shied away from that aspect of the flavor and went with a sweeter vibe.  I think it actually tasted like a 'mixed berries' flavor where blackberries are a large percentage of the mixture.  I'm a fan of bold, extreme flavors, so I would have liked this to be a bit more blam-pow-I'm-a-blackberry! but I think most people will enjoy the base as-is. The pie crust pieces were large and square, a little smaller than a quarter.  These were thicke...

Talenti Caramel Apple Pie

Image
Back in March (or so) Talenti released 3 new flavors.  They all sounded good, but only Caramel Apple Pie sounded amazing, however I hadn't found it in any grocery stores.  Last week when Lizzy and I went to Dierberg's, we finally picked up a pint of the Caramel Apple Pie gelato.  Talenti's website describes this as An abundance of real cinnamon sticks are used to make our signature cinnamon gelato.  Pieces of apple and sweet flaky pie crust are blended in to the cinnamon gelato.  Finally a caramel swirl is added for a unique take on caramel apple pie. So I had no idea caramel apple pie was an actual thing.  I thought Talenti's just decided to make an apple pie flavor and then stick some caramel in.  I was ok with this idea, but now that I know caramel apple pie exist, I want one. The first thing I noticed was the taste of cinnamon.  It wasn't overwhelming or sharp as some cinnamon flavored ice cream can be.  Rather, it was a warm, ...

Kemp's Pumpkin Pie (seasonal flavor)

Image
Where the heck are all of the seasonal pumpkin flavors this year?  I know they're out there.  I know Ben and Jerry’s made a Pumpkin Cheesecake flavor and Talenti made a Pumpkin Pie flavor, but they NEVR showed up at my local grocery store.  I mean COME ON.  I did, however, find Kemp’s Pumpkin Pie, a limited edition seasonal flavor. This was described as Pumpkin Ice cream swirled with real crust pieces. This ice cream was pretty good.  I didn’t realize until I got home that it was reduced fat.  (Ewwwwww!)  Normally I wouldn’t buy something reduced fat, but this wasn’t that bad.  The texture wasn’t as un-creamy as reduced-fat ice cream sometimes is.  Honestly, if I didn’t know it was reduced fat before I tried it I probably wouldn’t have guess.d I could tell it was pumpkin flavored, which is more than I can say for some pumpkin ice creams that lean too heavily on the ‘spice’ part of pumpkin-spice.  As far as the spi...

2nd Street Creamery Black Hills Strawberry Rhubarb

Image
Before I say anything else, let me say this is another hit from new-to-me brand 2nd Street Creamery.  Run, do not walk, to your nearest store and buy a pint. I have strong memories associated with strawberry rhubarb pie.  I remember, when I was really little, my grandmother and father trying to convince me to try a piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie, and me refusing because, what were  all those icky bits in there?  Then, when I was a bit older, I gave in and tried a piece, but picked out all the rhubarb and said, "I liked the pie except for that stuff."  I don't know what was wrong with me.  Strawberry rhubarb pie is, like, totes the bomb.  Nom. This is described as Strawberry ice cream with strawberries, rhubarb sauce, and pie crust pieces. The longer description on the website reads John, his wife and four daughters, trekked to the Black Hills of South Dakota for a family wedding.  At a point when John felt he needed an escape from the ...
