Haagen-Dazs Lemon Raspberry White Chocolate Trio (NEW!)

Image
Out of the three new dairy TRIO flavors (yes, there are non-dairy TRIOS this year!) I was most excited about the Lemon Raspberry White Chocolate flavor. The other flavors sound good, but less adventurous. Lemon Raspberry White Chocolate is white chocolate and raspberry sauce, lemon and raspberry ice cream.  Grammatically, the description makes it sounds like this flavor has white chocolate sauce, but in reality it has crunchy white chocolate layers. Tsk tsk. This reminded me so much of a lemon layer cake with raspberry filling. The lemon ice cream had a very light and sweet flavor like ... well ... lemon cake, and the white chocolate gave a touch of richness reminiscent of a buttercream frosting. I was initially disappointed with this flavor because I was hoping for much bolder flavors, but it's growing on me as more time passes. Like a lemon layer cake with raspberry filling, this wouldn't be a dessert I'd purchase or try to make from scratch, but I'd definitely...

Ben & Jerry's Cake My Day

Image
Once again, I'm totally behind. Madeline does such a good job at bringing you all the new flavors as they come out. But I'm always off in ice cream la la land (this time around ice cream la la land was reviewing the NOLA shipment) and it takes me a while to review new flavors. So for those of you that aren't already bored by Ben & Jerry's Cake My Day, read on. This limited batch flavor is described as Vanilla Cake Batter Ice Cream with Vanilla Cake Pieces, Buttercream Frosting & Raspberry Swirl, Now, like Madeline, I'm not the biggest fan of cake. Obviously my favorite dessert is ice cream, and after that it would have to be cookies, brownies, pie, cupcakes, then cake. Not that I would say no to a free piece of cake, but it is so easy for cake to be bad. Like bad cookies are still good, but bad cake is bad. However, lots of people were saying great things about this flavor, so I was stoked to try it. I'll start with the base. Vanilla c...

Ben and Jerry's Limited Batch: Cake My Day

Image
Have you tried Cake My Day yet? No? SLAP. Go get some now.  Ben and Jerry's hit it out of the park with their latest limited batch flavor described as " Vanilla cake batter ice cream with vanilla cake pieces, buttercream frosting, and raspberry swirls." (Oxford comma added by me because I'm a believer, so just shut up, mom.) I've probably mentioned several times on this blog that cake is just not one of my favorite desserts.  It can be really, really good, but too frequently it is bland and dry and boring.  Luckily, that is not the cake this ice cream is modeled on.  Imagine the best vanilla cake you've ever had.  Moist and dense and maybe sliiiigggghhhhttttllly under-baked.  Thick buttercream frosting.  A sweet raspberry filling between layers.  That is the cake this ice cream is modeled on. The vanilla cake batter base is divine.  On the 'cake batter' to 'cake' scale, it was maybe a bit toward the 'cake' end (for comparison, m...

New-to-me Brand: Bridgeman's Raspberry Fudge Torte

Image
You think you're an ice cream expert and then you discover a new-to-you-but-actually-very-old brand based in your state and you question your whole identity!  This happened to me last week when I saw a few flavors by the brand Bridgeman's at Tim and Tom's Speedy Market.  This brand was started by two brothers in 1936 in Duluth, Minnesota and from there expanded across the state and Midwest with ice cream shops and retail products.  It looks like they no longer have any shops in the Twin Cities, but do sell in several places including Tim and Tom's and Kramarczuk's. I picked up a 48 oz (3 pint) container of Raspberry Fudge Torte, and have my eye on several flavors to try in the future.  If I remember correctly, this ice cream cost somewhere in the range of $6-8 (making it really cheap!), but I'll double check next time I'm at Tim and Tom's. Before I give my review, I want to share Bridgman's description of their ice cream: Bridgeman's Ice ...

Haagen-Dazs White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle

Image
For me, this is THE ice cream flavor. I don't necessarily think this is the best ice cream flavor of all time. However, this ice cream flavor sort of opened my eyes to ice cream being more than Moose Tracks, cookie dough, mint, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. This flavor showed me ice cream was something you could have a lot of opinions about; you could be passionate about it. This might be the first flavor I was ever truly passionate about. So it is about damn time I review it. The description reads White chocolate ice cream swirled with tangy raspberry ribbons and satisfying chunks of chocolate fudge truffles . I'm going to enter into my review with the word tangy . I don't know if I can describe to you the difference between tangy and tart. Possibly tart is more sour, while tangy has more of a kick? I'm not sure, but this swirl is definitely tart and tangy. More so than actual raspberries. However, this swirl also tasted like real raspberries and wa...

Ben and Jerry's: Save our Swirled

Image
Guys I was totally stoked to try this ice cream when I heard it was coming out. Back in the day, like back between 2010 and 2013, Ben and Jerry's had a Target Exclusive Flavor called Berry Voluntary. That ice cream was Raspberry Cheesecake Ice Cream with White Chocolatey Chips & Raspberry Swirls . I loved this flavor. I was so sad when they discontinued it. Ben & Jerry's doesn't do a ton of berry flavors, especially raspberry flavors, and I thought this one was a gem. Then when I heard the description of Save our Swirled (the title does not give you much information about the contents of the ice cream), I knew the ice cream deities answered my prayers for a replacement of Berry Voluntary. The description for Save Our Swirled is Raspberry Ice Cream with Marshmallow & Raspberry Swirls with Dark & White Fudge Ice Cream Cones . In addition to a replacement for Berry Voluntary, you could say this is a raspberry version of Phish Food. First the b...

Ben and Jerry's Save Our Swirled

Image
Ben and Jerry's has a reputation as a socially and environmentally conscious company, and their recent partnership with  Avaaz  is no different.  They have partnered with Avaaz to work toward Climate Justice and clean energy.  You can find more info  here . (Also, go to this website to see B&J's amazing video/commercial comparing melting ice cream to climate change, it's worth your time!  If it's melted, it's ruined!) The new flavor SOS (Save our Swirled) was produced in conjunction with this new initiative.  It is Raspberry ice cream with marshmallow and raspberry swirls and dark & white fudge ice cream cones. I really really really like this ice cream.  It was a tasty flavor with just enough weirdness to make it great. The raspberry base was just faaaaaabulous! Ben and Jerry's should make more flavors with this base immediately.  It was very sweet with just enough tartness to keep it from being cloying.  There was a...

Cedar Crest Raspberry Fudge Chunk

Image
I finally have the second flavor of the Cedar Crest pints I picked up ages ago! In the middle there I got sucked into a 3 for $10 Haagen-Dazs sale as well as incredible excitement at finding The Tonight Dough, so I put off eating this ice cream. Cedar Crest Raspberry Fudge Chunk is described as Raspberry ribbon and fudge pieces blended in vanilla ice cream. The first thing I noticed about this pint is that the base ice cream is white.  Like really really white.  Like can't clap on the beat white.  Snowflake, the pistachio flavor from Cedar Crest that I tried, was also this unnaturally bleached color.  Seems to be a theme. I kind of wonder why they are doing this. I mean, if you have ever looked at milk or cream it is not a stark white color. So white! Anyway, aside from the slightly off-putting color, this was a pretty decent ice cream. Cedar Crest is really starting to grow on me with their moderately priced ice cream and interesting flavors. Ha....
