Sweet Me was the first brand to have their new flavors hit the shelves in the Minneapolis market, which makes sense since they are based in St. Paul! AND they have SEVEN new flavors that all sound amazing. I picked up Red Velvet Cake as well as Lemon Bar and Apple Pie, so look for those reviews soon. Sweet Me Creamery's Red Velvet Cake is Red velvet cake flavored ice cream with white chocolatey flakes and a cream cheese frosting swirl. There are two elements that make up any Red Velvet flavor. A chocolate base (cake, cookie, ice cream, etc....) dyed red and a cream cheese frosting. Since the base is really just chocolate, when people say they like Red Velvet, they really mean they like the cream cheese frosting (or the chocolate/cream cheese combo). They may not know  that's what they mean, but it is. Weirdly, I have never seen a 'chocolate and cream cheese icing' flavor. Somehow the red dye makes the combination socially acceptable. I want to jump right in to the description of Edy's Cake and Cookie Fantasy Frozen Yogurt: Red velvet and sugar cookie frozen yogurt swirled together with decadent cookie dough pieces and chocolate cookie crumbles. I mean, just, what is going on here? This sounds like a snack drunk, college Madeline would have concocted. I was pretty skeptical of the red velvet and sugar cookie combo. Red Velvet is a dark, rich, chocolate decadence, and sugar cookies are sweet and light. Together they tasted like those ridiculous delicious/disgusting grocery store frosted sugar cookies with icing attempting to be red velvet-flavored. Obviously, this flavor was over-the-top sugary, but I think it would have worked with a rich ice cream base instead of a yogurt base. Despite the sweetness, the tartness of the yogurt came through but didn't really blend  with the sugar. I kept getting random blasts of tartness through the sugary background. I tried my first of the revamped Blue Bunny flavors not long ago. I was impressed and decided to try some more. It is also that time of the semester where I don't have a ton of time to commit to blogging, so I bought a big container of Blue Bunny I could work on for a while before getting around to a review. As a lover of red velvet cake who is frequently disappointed with red velvet ice cream, I knew I had to buy the Blue Bunny Red Velvet Cupcake. This flavor is described as Red velvet ice cream, cream cheese flavored ice cream, red velvet cake pieces . So first, why is this ice cream called Red Velvet Cupcake and not just Red Velvet Cake? Alright, folks, I took Madeline up on her suggestion. I would definitely fancy myself a red velvet cake connoisseur and I am incredibly picky about red velvet cake frozen dairy treats. For example, Ben & Jerry's Red Velvet Cake ice cream, in my opinion, tastes like cream cheese frosting with a hint of cake. Which I guess is fine if they called it Cream Cheese Frosting ice cream, but they didn't. I love cream cheese frosting, but when you get a slice of red velvet cake, there is usually more cake than frosting. Knowing my feelings on this, Madeline, after recently trying Dairy Queen's Red Velvet Cake Blizzard, recommended I try it. While traveling last weekend to a conference, I stopped a Dairy Queen to give this Blizzard a try. Lizzy has this crazy idea that she wants someone to produce a Red Velvet cake ice cream that is light on the cream cheese flavor.  I think she is insane.  Without cream cheese frosting, Red Velvet cake is just oddly colored chocolate cake.  Booooorring!  If you are part of Lizzy's anti-cream cheese cabal, you will hate this ice cream.  If you are a normal, cream cheese-loving human being, you will love it!
