Dairy Queen July Blizzard of the Month: M&Ms Peanut Butter Monster Cookie

Image
Look at me go, I'm going to keep my Blizzard of the Month streak alive with only one day left in July.  I spent the first three weeks of July in Utah, and while I did have access to a DQ, I spent most of my time indulging in local brands and scoop shops. Now that I'm back in Minnesota, I have time to go to DQ so I stopped in on my first day back at the office. The July Blizzard is M&Ms Peanut Butter Monster Cookie, described as The M&Ms Peanut Butter Monster Cookie Blizzard Treat is filled with a monstrous combination of peanut butter cookies, M&Ms, choco-chunks, peanut butter topping, and world-famous vanilla soft serve. Apparently  Monster Cookies  are a thing  that I totally missed out on until about a year ago. From the description, this Blizzard should have been awesome, but I found it pretty 'meh.' It just felt like a bunch of different stuff thrown into soft-serve, and the elements didn't really complement each other or go together in...

Heyn's Ice Cream

Image
Okay folks, the moment you have all been waiting for: Iowa City ice cream. One part about moving to Iowa City which is kind of a bummer is I'm no longer along the Big Muddy Mississippi River. The name of our blog is now slightly less relevant. When I pointed this out to my dad he responded, "But you're near the Iowa River which connects to the Mississippi!" But with that logic you could basically move anywhere in the United States and that's not what we were going for when we named this blog.  Oh well. Back to ice cream. There is one ice cream shop in Iowa City that isn't a chain or froyo or something, and it is Heyn's. My roommate and two of her friends were going a couple of days ago. Luckily, she's already got my number and asked if I wanted to join. If you remember, I tried to go to Heyn's when I visited the campus back in March, but they were closed because of a strange incident in which someone called the store and threatened the employees ...

Cedar Crest Pirate's Bounty (Booty!)

Image
Lizzy's been killing the review game lately, while this has been sitting in my drafts folder for a month.  I'm still alive guys, and here's a review to prove it! Cedar Crest is a Wisconsin-based dairy, that recently started selling pints of their ice cream (as opposed to larger containers).  It's in the middle of the pint price range.  It's not super-premium ice cream, but it's still pretty good and they have some fun flavors. On a recent trip to the grocery store I picked up a pint of Pirate's Bounty because, I thought it was called 'Pirate's Booty' and I'm mature.  This ice cream is M&Ms chocolate candies and chocolate sandwich cookies in caramel flavored ice cream. One thing that's interesting about this ice cream is they sprung enough money to Mars to use actual M&Ms, which is not super common. This is kind of your generic, fun, throw lots of mix-ins in party flavor, but the caramel base sets it apart from its ...

Izzy's Ice Cream

Image
Madeline and I just went HAM with ice cream this week. Thursday we went to Izzy's Ice Cream. They are known for their crazy flavors. They have so many, including a cereal milk flavor which I need  to try. Unfortunately they didn't have that flavor the day we went. Izzy's is also known for their "Izzy scoop." Basically the Izzy scoop is a little baby scoop you can add to your ice cream for just a little bit more. I think this is a really cool concept. I always want to try as many flavors as possible but sometimes you don't want to eat enough ice cream to try a zillion flavors. We met my friend Bea there, who is from Minneapolis and just got back to the states after studying abroad, it was really nice to see her! This is Bea's cone. She got lemon buttermilk and salted caramel and loved them both! I sampled the Thai Iced Tea flavor they had as a "mystery flavor". Not really sure what they meant by mystery flavor but whatevs. The flavor is al...
