Whitey's Mint Chipper Ice Cream Sandwich

Image
Dearest Readers, I'm sure you all were incredibly devastated the last few weeks when Madeline and I weren't posting much because you wanted to know about all of the winter season flavors. Delightful peppermints, scrumptious holiday cookies, lovely hot cocoa flavors. Unfortunately, it was not only finals that kept you from reading about winter flavors. My HyVee hardly had any winter flavors stocked! Grants I'm sure I could have simply driven across town to one of the other HyVees and found plenty of winter goodness, but I'm lazy. However, there was one local Iowa winter treat on the shelves of my grocery store, the Whitey's Mint Chipper ice cream sandwich. This treat is described as A delicious blend of Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream between two homemade chocolate cookies! Starting out, the mint chocolate chip ice cream was pretty standard. It was strongly mint flavor, but distinctly mint extract, not leaf. However, I wasn't expecting anything differen...

Whitey's Harvest Chipper Ice Cream Sandwich

I'm going to start this review by letting you all, Dearest Readers, know that I feel perfectly fine. I am not sick and I obviously have not keeled over and died. I was at HyVee the other day and found these ice cream sandwiches from Whitey's. I don't remember seeing them in my HyVee before then. They are, however, quite clearly a fall themed dessert. The description of this treat is A delicious SEASONAL blend of our famous pumpkin ice cream sandwiched between two Homemade Spice cookies!  (emphasis in original). I was, to say the least, a bit surprised to find these in stores in February. I was also excited. In my opinion, it is a bummer pumpkin is relegated to a seasonal dessert flavor. Pumpkin is great, and I would like to eat pumpkin ice cream all year long. I would even take simply being able to eat pumpkin all year long. A few days after purchasing this ice cream sandwich, I was trying to find some canned pumpkin to make pumpkin curry, and couldn't find any. W...

Whitey's Ice Cream: Sgt. Camo

Image
A while ago, Madeline asked me if I had ever heard of Whitey's and if I'd tried their Sgt. Camo flavor. This was before I'd tried Whitey's Graham Central Station, so the only time I'd tried Whitey's was when I visited the University of Iowa back in the Spring. Apparently one of Madeline's friends loves Whitey's. Madeline described the Sgt. Camo flavor to me and I thought, "oh cool, a s'mores flavor" but wasn't too excited. I guess, at the time, what the flavor actually was  didn't register with me. The flavor is described as Graham cracker and marshmallow ice creams with a ribbon of Whitey's famous fudge.  Hold it right there, folks. An ice cream with graham cracker AND marshmallow ice creams? What the WHAT?! After trying the Graham Central Station flavor and loving it, I remember the conversation I'd had with Madeline, looking up the description of Sgt. Camo and was so stoked to try it. One more quick no...

Whitey's Pumpkin Ice Cream

Image
Happy fall, happy pumpkins, happy leaves, happy turkey, happy ice cream! I realize it has been fall for a while now, but as the winter seasonal ice cream flavors are starting to creep into stores and temperatures are dropping even further, I'm holding onto fall weather and fall flavors for dear life. In addition to tasty flavors, fall means being slammed with school work. I've actually eaten quite a bit of this flavor before having time to get around to reviewing it. So here's what will probably be the last review of a fall ice cream flavor from Lizzy. This flavor tasted strongly of spices. The spices in this flavor were cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. They're not showing up in this photo as well as I thought they would, but there were little flecks of various spices throughout the ice cream! However, the spices in this flavor did not over power the pumpkin flavor. Unlike so many pumpkin desserts out on the market, this ice cream actually t...

Whitey's Graham Central Station Ice Cream

One of my life mottos is, when the going gets rough, buy more ice cream. Specifically, when you have a lot of work to do for graduate school, buy larger containers of ice cream. This way, you can still eat ice cream every night, but not worry about reviewing flavors as frequently. Also, a lot of Whitey's flavors are only sold in the big tubs at my HyVee. But mostly, graduate school is a lot of work. I also haven't reviewed any Whitey's since moving to Iowa. Whitey's is based in the Quad Cities and sold around Iowa and Illinois. I had some Whitey's while I was visiting University of Iowa, and I was pretty impressed with the flavor I bought, given the price.  While I was perusing the Whitey's ice cream flavors a while ago, this one, Graham Central Station caught my eye. Other than in a S'Mores flavor, I don't think you see graham crackers in ice cream often. And especially as the star of the show! Even outside of the ice cream world, I th...

Whitey's Ice Cream: White Chocolate Raspberry

I had quite the ice cream adventure while in Iowa City visiting the University of Iowa. There are no independent ice cream shops in down town Iowa City, so after having some some tasty Thai food in down town Iowa City, I drove a bit out of town to try an ice cream shop called Heyn's Ice Cream. I had to rush because I thought they were closing soon. When I got there I saw two cop cars in the parking lot. My first thought was, "Oh the Iowa City PD is cool, they like ice cream!" But when I got to the door, it was locked. An employee came out and told me they had received a call threatening the employees, so they had to call the cops and close early. I was sooo devastated. As I got into my car to drive away, I saw a family try to go in and experience the same disappointment. After a lot of running that day, the Thai food did not fill me all the way up so I needed some ice cream. There are some fro yo shops in Iowa City, but I was really feeling some ice cream, not fro yo. L...
