New for 2017: Ben & Jerry's Oat of this Swirled

Image
2012 was a pretty tragic year for ice cream. That year we lost not only Oatmeal Cookie Chunk from Ben & Jerry's, but also Dublin Mudslide, and Crème Brûlée. As soon as Ben & Jerry's announced their new for 2017 flavor, Oat of this Swirled, mourners of Oatmeal Cookie Chunk got excited. This new flavor is described as Buttery Brown Sugar Ice Cream with Fudge Flakes & Oatmeal Cinnamon Cookie Swirls . Now does this flavor hold a candle to Oatmeal Cookie Chunk? Well first the base of this flavor was interesting. I didn't necessarily taste buttery brown sugar distinctly, but the base did have kind of a cookie aura. It was also clear that I wasn't eating a vanilla or sweet cream base. It was overall a warmer vibe, but the buttery brown sugarness could have been stronger. The best part of this pint was definitely the fudge flakes. They were HUGE and amazing. Fudge flakes are definitely one of B&J's best mix-ins. The dark chocolate definitely mell...

Ben and Jerry's Oat of This Swirld

Image
Dearest readers, I've had some sort of super-virus. I was really sick for two weeks about a month ago, felt pretty much better for two weeks, and now I'm sick again with what feels like the exact same cold+fatigue thing. So apologies, I've had this post written for a few weeks, but I'm just now getting around to publishing it. Oatmeal Cookie Chunk was a popular Ben and Jerry's ice cream with somewhat of a cult following that got sent to the flavor graveyard in 2012. Oatmeal Cookie Chunk was sweet cream cinnamon ice cream with chunks of oatmeal cookies and fudge.   This sounds pretty darn close to the description of Oat of This Swirld: buttery brown sugar ice cream with fudge flakes and oatmeal cinnamon cookie swirls.  Unfortunately, Oatmeal Cookie Chunk left this world for the next before I really got into ice cream, so I know I've tried it, but I don't really remember it; however I was pretty disappointed by Oat of this Swirled, and it seems to be t...

Ben and Jerry's Limited Edition Chocolate Cherry Garcia

Image
Is there a Ben and Jerry's flavor more iconic than Cherry Garcia? I think not. It's also pretty good, to boot. When I heard Ben and Jerry's was releasing a new version with a Chocolate base as part of their 'Flavor Flip' gimmick, I was equal parts excited and wary to try it. Chocolate is great, but why mess with a classic? Chocolate Cherry Garcia is Chocolate ice cream with Cherries and Fudge Flakes. I tried this twice on its own and then tried it with the OG Cherry Garcia for comparison.  The chocolate base was nice and dark, but not so dark it overwhelmed the cherries and fudge flakes.  I think  this is slightly darker than the normal Ben and Jerry's base, but I might be confusing their normal chocolate base with their milk chocolate base. Either way, I found it appropriately chocolate-y, something I've quibbled about in other reviews of chocolate Ben and Jerry's flavors. The cherries infused the base with a hint of cherry flavor.  This ...

Ben and Jerry's Coconuts for Caramel Core

Image
I've started seeing the new Ben and Jerry's core flavors in stores, and recently reviewed the one I was most excited about, Brownie Batter Core.  Unfortunately, this flavor was underwhelming and just didn't do it for me.  Luckily, Coconuts for Caramel Core restored some of my faith in Ben and Jerry's.  For the TLDR: the core wasn't that great, but HOLY COCONUTS, BATMAN one of the base flavors blew me away. (Can you guess which one?) Coconuts for Caramel is described as  Caramel and Sweet Cream Coconut ice cream with fudge flakes and a caramel core. First for the caramel base.  I thought this was a recycled flavor from one of the cookie cores, but it turns out Spectacular Speculoos used a Dark Caramel ice cream.  I think these two caramel flavors were pretty similar, but maybe the caramel ice cream here was a bit lighter.  It had a nice light and round flavor, almost like a Werther's Caramel hard candy.  It wasn't something to write...

Ben and Jerry's Boom Chocolatta!

Image
Lizzy and I finally have our phalanges on the eagerly awaited Ben and Jerry's Cookie Cores!  Since we got these from our respective Targets as approximately the same time, we decided to write joint reviews of all three.  Lizzy suggested we start with Boom Chocolatta and off we went! This is described as Mocha & Caramel ice creams with chocolate cookies, fudge flakes and a chocolate cookie core. Here's my (Madeline) take: When you eat Ben and Jerry's core ice creams you definitely have to go in with a strategy.  There are so many different components.  Do you try to get balanced spoonfuls? Do you try to sample each element individually? Do you dive in with no regard for life and limb and wake up 5 minutes later on the floor with ice cream dripping down your chin?  I chose to try each element individually; however, I suggest you do not use this approach because individually each element (except the core) was kind of 'meh,' but together they were l...

Ben & Jerry's Candy Bar Pie: A Saga in 6 Acts

Image
Preface Yes, I am copying my sister in the format of this post. But it was too good to pass up, and the story of me and ice cream flavor really cannot be described in any way besides a SAGA. Introduction It's my turn, finally to review the amazing, limited-edition, Ben & Jerry's Candy Bar Pie. I first had this ice cream a while ago, like a WHOLE month ago, but just haven't had time to review it. In the mean time I think I have eaten like 3 or 4 pints of this ice cream. Mostly because they don't sell it in Eldon, so I had to drive 25 mins to the Lake of the Ozarks to buy this flavor. I decided to stock up when I bought it so I would have to drive to the Lake again too soon to buy more. But in reality, a 25 minute drive is nothing compared to the reality of what I have gone through to get this ice cream. Act I: Romance I have waited over a YEAR for this ice cream to come out in pints. Back in Spring of 2013, Candy Bar Pie hit the scoop shops. I had it at the...
