Sweet Me Creamery Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler

Image
Rhubarb and strawberry rhubarb are two of my favorite summer flavors. Rhubarb is getting more popular, particularly in the ice cream world, but I wish it would catch on with basic white girls like pumpkin spice has so there would be just as many rhubarb treats in the summer as there are pumpkin spice products in the fall. Also, HOW IS IT ALREADY MORE THAN A WEEK INTO AUGUST!? Sweet Me Creamery Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler is vanilla bean ice cream with a strawberry rhubarb swirl and big chunks of cobbler topping.  I'll talk separately about the idea and the execution of this flavor. I love Sweet Me's look The idea. There aren't too many rhubarb ice creams out there, but I can't think of any others that use a vanilla or vanilla bean base. This is an attempt to capture the flavor of strawberry-rhubarb pie or cobbler a la mode, which I think is a great idea. I mean, the invention of pie a la mode (in Duluth, MN no less!) is basically the pinnacle of American cultur...

Gelato at Acero and Ice Cream at The Crossing

Image
Usually I wouldn't review ice cream or gelato I get at a restaurant. In fact, I wouldn't normally get ice cream or gelato at a restaurant; I would get a meal and then go somewhere else for lunch. Or I would use it as an opportunity to enjoy a dessert other  than ice cream, what a shock. However, this past weekend when I dined at Acero in Maplewood with my boyfriend's family and Acero's sister restaurant, The Crossing in Clayton with a friend's family, I learned they both make their own gelato and The Crossing recently started making their own ice cream as well. In addition, both of the dessert menus featured different desserts a la mode. A bit of back story, this past weekend was Washington University's graduation weekend, so there were many celebrations to be had, which was the cause of all this going out to eat. I am combining my reviews of these frozen desserts because of the coincidence that I dined at these sister restaurants in the same weekend, and be...

2nd Street Creamery Black Hills Strawberry Rhubarb

Image
Before I say anything else, let me say this is another hit from new-to-me brand 2nd Street Creamery.  Run, do not walk, to your nearest store and buy a pint. I have strong memories associated with strawberry rhubarb pie.  I remember, when I was really little, my grandmother and father trying to convince me to try a piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie, and me refusing because, what were  all those icky bits in there?  Then, when I was a bit older, I gave in and tried a piece, but picked out all the rhubarb and said, "I liked the pie except for that stuff."  I don't know what was wrong with me.  Strawberry rhubarb pie is, like, totes the bomb.  Nom. This is described as Strawberry ice cream with strawberries, rhubarb sauce, and pie crust pieces. The longer description on the website reads John, his wife and four daughters, trekked to the Black Hills of South Dakota for a family wedding.  At a point when John felt he needed an escape from the ...
