Last year I was really excited for Haagen-Dazs original TRIOS, but I thought all three flavors were kind of a let down. Mainly, they weren't well balanced so one element always ended up more prominent than the others.  Their new flavors, Coconut Caramel Chocolate, Lemon Raspberry White Chocolate, and Vanilla Caramel White Chocolate all sound delicious, and I bought all three hoping they were better than last year's. Coconut Caramel Chocolate is Belgian chocolate and caramel sauce, coconut and chocolate ice cream. If Coconut Caramel Chocolate is any indication, Haagen-Dazs has at least somewhat addressed the balance issues in this new iteration of TRIO flavors. Taking my first bite of this flavor, I was hit with a warm, tropical coconut flavor. As I ate more and more ice cream, the coconut flavor was supplanted by a soft, milky, smooth chocolate spiked with the darker, deeper chocolate of the crunchy layer. It's high time I got around to reviewing the rest of the new Haagen-Dazs TRIO flavors. I tried Vanilla Blackberry Chocolate when the TRIOs were first released, but hadn't tried any others when I saw that my grocery store was no longer going to carry them. *GASP* I scooped up the remaining three flavors: Coffee Vanilla Chocolate, Salted Caramel Chocolate, and Triple Chocolate. I'll review them from least favorite to most favorite. Up first, Salted Caramel Chocolate. I think Haagen-Dazs' insistence on making every flavor a trio of flavors really hurt them here. Of course, it couldn't be called a trio if it's not a trio, but they really could have left out the chocolate ice cream. Both the salted caramel and chocolate were such strong flavors that they blended together and made kind of a non-flavor. Look at me go! I am moving through these Trio flavors. I've already tried the two flavors of this line that sounded the best to me, the triple chocolate and the coffee. I've picked up all of these flavors at the North Dodge HyVee. I'm not sure why, but this caramel flavor didn't sound like it would be all that delicious to me. I think the orange-ish-gold color on the label of this flavor looks really strange to me and that's what made me kind of turned off to the idea of this flavor. Can I just say that it kind of bothers me that there are four flavors in the Trio line? Like three wouldn't actually be enough flavors, but then it would be all threes! After having a great experience with my first Trio flavor, Triple Chocolate, I was very excited to try another one. The coffee one sounded the next most appetizing after the Triple Chocolate, so I grabbed some last time I was at the store. This flavor is described as Layers of crispy Belgian chocolate, coffee & vanilla ice cream . Just like the first Trio flavor I tried, this one got a little bit icy on the top, but it was fine further down. So first impression, the Belgian chocolate in this flavor didn't seem as bitter as in the other flavor I had. Out of all new flavors and products this year, I'm was most anticipating the Haagen-Dazs TRIOs. Concept-wise they seem like the perfect new product: different enough to stand out from other new products, unique to the market, but not too gimmicky and still recognizably ice cream. Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Blackberry Chocolate TRIO, crispy Belgian chocolate, vanilla and blackberry ice cream, is the only fruity flavor in the line up. Do you remember those Creme Savers candies? I don't think they ever had a blackberry flavor, but if they did, the combination of the vanilla and blackberry ice creams would taste EXACTLY like it. It's less tart, sweeter, and less berry-intensive than a fresh berries-and-cream flavor. The vanilla isn't necessarily a distinct flavor, but it definitely mellows the blackberry more than a straight sweet cream ice cream would. When I first heard about the new Haagen-Dazs Trio flavors, I thought they sounded kind of gimmicky. The trio flavors are layers of two different ice cream flavors and crispy Belgian chocolate. But then one of my roommates got a pint before I did, and I asked her what she thought. She emphatically said it was good, so my expectations went up. There are three other Trio flavors, a salted caramel, coffee, and blackberry flavor. My HyVee had all but the blackberry, but just a classic triple chocolate sounded the most delicious the other day when I picked up this flavor.
