FoMu Avocado and Peanut Butter Mud Pie

Image
Okay, so when I was in the St. Louis airport eating Baskin Robbins, I was flying to Boston en-route to my next research location. When I arrived in Boston, my friend Brett immediately asked me if I wanted to get ice cream. I surprised him when I said no, because I'd eaten some in the airport. His response of, "WHO EVEN ARE YOU?" was of course, appropriate. When he continued on to tell me that FoMu, a Boston vegan ice cream company had a pop-up shop only a few blocks from his apartment, I changed my mind. Not that it was that difficult. I'd heard of FoMu before, but this was my first time trying their ice cream, because they are still only sold around Massachusetts and Rhode Island. FoMu makes their vegan ice creams with coconut milk and they also make vegan baked goods. The flavor offerings at the pop-up shop were a combination of totally desserty flavors and super unique creations. I decided to get one of each, Avocado and Peanut Butter Mud Pie. I don't...

LA Ice Cream Adventures Part 1: Salt & Straw

Image
Yes, Dearest Readers, you read that correctly. I got the opportunity to go to SALT AND STRAW. After my California fieldwork I hung out in LA for a couple of days with my friends Katy and Kylie. Our plan for day 1 was to wander around Venice Beach and then get ice cream. My friend Kylie has a whole LA bucket list, but didn't have Salt and Straw on it. After checking the Venice Beach ice cream offerings and seeing that Salt and Straw was in the area, we put it on her list and immediately got to check it off. Salt and Straw (for all you ice cream n00bs) is THE original hipster ice cream spot, doing wacky flavors way before it was cool. No surprise, Salt and Straw started in Portland, OR and now has a handful of locations in Portland and LA. Lots of ice cream bloggers have gotten on the Salt and Straw train and ordered their pints, but I'm still a broke graduate student and don't always have $65 + shipping to drop on 5 pints. So I was super excited for this opportunity to...

Izzy's Darby's Avocado Honey Almond

Image
At the beginning of April, Izzy's posted on their Facebook page that they would be making a limited edition, available through April, avocado flavored ice cream.  Darby's Avocado Honey and Almond ice cream is inspired by the movie  While We're Young  showing at the Landmark Theater.  I read this and immediately knew I had to pick up a pint.  My last experience with an avocado frozen dessert was the truly, despicably awful  avocado frozen yogurt from Yogurt Lab .  It was the worst. I was ready for some avocado ice cream to swoop in and avenge the terror inflicted on me by this frozen yogurt. Thankfully, Izzy's Darby's Avocado Honey and Almond was up to the task.  I couldn't find a description anywhere, but it's pretty self-evident from the name. First things first.  This ice cream tasted like avocado, not vomit!! Not only did it pass that very low qualification, it was delicious! This ice cream was very very sweet.  If it h...

Avocado FroYo AKA The Biggest Disappointment in the History of EVER!

Image
I am mad.  I am furious.  I am seething.  You are probably wondering, dear reader, why I am so angry, what put me in this funk, and I will tell you.  It was avocado frozen yogurt.  "But you love avocado," you, dear reader, might say.  And I do, I truly do, which is why this abomination, this disgrace to both avocados and frozen yogurt has me so riled up. I mentioned in my intro post that I am a frequent customer of the Minneapolis frozen yogurt chain Yogurt Lab, and one of the reasons I go so often is that they purported to offer an avocado flavor.  I was rightly excited by this, and every time I went to Yogurt Lab I did a prayer to the god of all things frozen that THIS would be the day they had the avocado flavor. When I walked in on Sunday, lo and behold, there was the sign declaring that, with the pull of a lever I could fill my cardboard cup with delicious avacado-y goodness.  Without hesitation I strode to the dispenser and and let flow...
