New Orleans Ice Cream Company Chocolate City
I never really expected to be talking race politics on an ice cream blog. Buuut thanks to an interesting ice cream name choice from New Orleans Ice Cream Company, here we are.
The description of this flavor is A Politician's Faux-pas Inspired This Deliciously Satirical Chocolate Ice Cream With White Chocolate Chips.
Now some background. "Chocolate City" is a term used to describe a city with a predominantly African American population or one that also has predominantly African American political leadership. Scholars, such as Cornel West and comedians, like Chris Rock, have used the term and the band Parliament has an album title Chocolate City. Now, on MLK Day in 2006, only months after Hurricane Katrina, then Mayor of New Orleans, C. Ray Nagin, gave a speech in which he used the term chocolate city to talk about his hopes for the future demographic of a post-Katrina New Orleans. Of course, a bunch of people got super offended. There is obviously a lot going on with respect to race around Katrina and New Orleans in 2005-2006 that 13 and 14 year old Lizzy wasn't really aware of. And although I'm not sure how I feel about this, New Orleans Ice Cream Company decided to make a chocolate ice cream with white chocolate chips and call it Chocolate City. Oh boy.
So getting back to the ice cream. This flavor was a lot harder and denser than other New Orleans flavors I've had. I think that may just be the nature of making a very chocolatey chocolate ice cream? I don't know if I love how dense chocolate ice creams can be. Because this thing was packed with chocolate flavor.
New Orleans was using lots of cocoa powder to make this flavor. It almost tasted a bit like a fudgsicle, but creamier. There were lots of white chocolate chips, but they were a bit small. Because they were so small, you couldn't really taste the white chocolate flavor. The intense chocolate flavor drowned them out. I feel like that wouldn't have been a problem if the chips were a touch bigger. They were slightly soft, which is typical of some white chocolate and smooth.
Overall, this was flavor is basically a nice chocolate base with some crunch. The white chocolate chips were fun, but didn't add much flavor (as is the nature of white chocolate). I'll give this flavor š¦š¦/4 cones!
