Ben and Jerry's Empower Mint

A while back Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry's fame created the ice cream flavor Bernie's Yearning in support of Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders.  The flavor was mint ice cream with a disk of chocolate covering the top meant to represent the wealth disparity between the wealthiest 1% of the nation and the rest of the county.  The idea is that you break up the hunk of chocolate into smaller pieces and distribute it throughout the pint, representing a redistribution of wealth!  This was not an official product, as a company can't endorse a presidential candidate, but Ben and Jerry, the people, not the company did have a give away of 50 pints of this flavor. Lizzy entered the drawing, but unfortunately wasn't selected. Ben and Jerry's new flavor, Empower Mint, pays tribute to the social mission of Bernie's Yearning.  This flavor is

Peppermint ice cream with fudge brownies and fudge swirls.

The blurb on the side of the pint reads

Democracy is in your hands!  This fudge-filled flavor reflects our belief that voting gives everyone a taste of empowerment and that an election should be more 'by the people' and less 'buy the people!' We all deserve an equal serving of democracy.  Learn more and take action at benjerry.com/democracy.

Madeline's take: I love Ben and Jerry's other mint flavors so I was fully expecting to love Empower Mint as well, so I was very surprised when the flavor of peppermint in the first bite was cloying and overwhelming.  Thankfully once the brownies and fudge swirl got involved they managed to tone down the overwhelming peppermint.

The brownies are your typically amazing Greyston Bakery brownies (bow down!) but thicker and more fudgy than normal if that is even possible.  The fudge sauce was also very thick and definitely tasted like fudge, not just chocolate sauce.

Lizzy's take: I agree with Madeline, that if you get a bit on it's own, the peppermint base is a lot to handle. It has the same flavor and intensity of the peppermint swirl in Chocolate Peppermint Crunch (which has a chocolate base). But as soon as I got some fudge swirl and brownies, they balanced out the peppermint base. The fudge swirl was super fudgey. The condensed milk flavor of the fudge was definitely there and the texture was very thick.

The brownies were also sooo incredibly moist. I thought they were a bit smaller than standard Greyston brownies, but there were a lot of them so it didn't matter. In sum, this flavor is great, so I'll give it šŸ¦šŸ¦šŸ¦/4 cones. It would have gotten four if it didn't have that moment of being too sweet. (Also I reviewed Chocolate Peppermint Crunch before we implemented the rating system, but that flavor probably would get 4 cones, just saying).

Look at the fudge!
