SnoSpice
Not long ago, after connecting via Twitter, Madeline and Lizzy were sent the whole line up of SnoSpice products. You have probably never heard of SnoSpice and are quite confused and not exactly sure what this blog post is going to be about.
That is because SnoSpice is an incredibly new company; new as of December 2015! According to their website, "SnoSpice is a collection of herb and spice blends that transform ordinary vanilla ice cream into an amazing array of flavors." The idea for the Atlanta company occurred after "a late night yearning for chocolate ice cream in a house with only vanilla." While this may be the ultimate first world problem, I've been there and it's rough.
Now with SnoSpice, when you find your self in such a predicament you can turn vanilla ice cream into any of six flavors: Cocoa Cayenne, Cinnamon for Optimists, Pumpkin Carriage, Tumeric'd, Lemon + Basil, or Deep Chocolate Sea Salt. Pretty rad.
Last night, with the purchase of some Prairie Farms Vanilla ice cream, Madeline and Lizzy set out to try all 6 SnoSpice flavors. Before we started our task, two questions came to mind. First, how much SnoSpice should we mix in to our ice cream? Second, will we have to let the ice cream melt in order mix in the SnoSpice?
The answer to the first question is more than you might think. The answer to the second question is, yeah a little bit, but it wasn't so bad.
Now for a review of the flavors:
Cinnamon for Optimists (Korintje Cinnamon, Cardamom):
Lizzy's thoughts- The cardamom in this flavor was stronger than the cinnamon.
Madeline's thoughts- I love cardamom, and I feel like SnoSpice is really getting me with the cardamom in this flavor, which I thought was way stronger than the cinnamon flavor.
Cocoa Cayenne (Dark Chocolate, Cayenne, Sea Salt):
Lizzy's thoughts- The cocoa was surprisingly sweet and the cayenne kick was delayed, but super strong!
Madeline's thoughts - SnoSpice did not shy away from the spice, the cayenne kick is very strong. The chocolate is rich enough to balance this out.
Pumpkin Carriage (Spices - including Ceylon Cinnamon and Nutmeg, Pumpkin):
Lizzy's thoughts- I was pleasantly surprised with the pumpkin flavor being so strong, even in dried form!
Madeline's thoughts- This flavor worked so well with the vanilla base. It was like the vanilla was just another spice component in the mix. I could also taste the pumpkin, not just the spices.
Tumeric'd (Turmeric, Cardamom, Saigon Cinnamon, Cumin):
Lizzy's thoughts- This tasted exactly like a good yellow curry, which worked surprisingly well with the vanilla ice cream.
Madeline's thoughts- I wanted this one to be stronger. You can always mix more in, but I thought I felt like I added a lot and didn't want to overdo it. Again, this worked well with the vanilla, it added another element to the spice combination. I would like to make some plain cashew ice cream and mix this in.
Lemon + Basil (Basil, Lemon Juice Powder):
Lizzy's thoughts- This was the flavor I was most skeptical of. But it was better than I expected. The lemon was sweet and round, not too tart. It reminded me of lemon custard pie. Obviously the basil was dried not fresh, and someday I want to try a lemon basil ice cream made with fresh basil.
Madeline's thoughts- POW! This flavor was zingy! This was probably the boldest and most unusual flavor in the bunch. Again, the vanilla ice cream really added to the flavor profile. I would love to try this in strawberry ice cream. I'm imagining strawberry ice cream with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and a sprinkling of Lemon+Basil SnoSpice.
Dark Chocolate Sea Salt (Dark Chocolate, Sea Salt):
Lizzy's thoughts- This wasn't as salty as I would like. However, I ate this flavor last, and we were n00bs and didn't use palate cleansers, so there was still a lot going on in my mouth that could have masked the other flavors.
Madeline's thoughts- This was the first flavor I tried, and unlike Lizzy, I could taste the saltiness. The flavor profile had a nice rich and dark chocolate at the beginning, followed by the sea salt at the end. The salty/sweet balance was perfect.
So if you've sat through this entire review you probably like ice cream a lot. But odds are you don't like ice cream as much as Madeline and Lizzy. You might be thinking, if I only have vanilla in the freezer, that's okay, I don't need to turn it into lemon + basil, this product isn't for me. But we would disagree. We thought of a multitude of other uses for SnoSpice. Most of the SnoSpice flavors would taste good in other ice cream too. Imagine Cinnamon for Optimists in chocolate ice cream, or Lemon + Basil in strawberry. Want to spice up your next party? Have an ice cream bar with lots of toppings, sauces, and SnoSpice! Sprinkle some in your coffee, your morning oatmeal or yogurt (and remember there's no sugar)! You could even bake with them! And they will keep forever. We definitely recommend checking out this new and unique product!

This ratio of spice to ice cream worked pretty well.
