Haagen-Dazs Artisan Collection Chocolate Caramelized Oat Ice Cream

We get all of the food groups over here at the Big Muddy. Get your veggies from Clementine's Southern Sweet Corn, your whole grain from this Haagen-Dazs Artisan Collection, and your dairy, obviously.

Further proof my freezer sucks.

The description of the flavor reads: We are proud to collaborate with San Fransisco's Clairesquares to make a truly unique ice cream inspired by her Irish treats. Together we take chocolatey, caramelized oat clusters and mix them into rich caramel ice cream.

Clairesquares is quite obviously a woman named Claire who makes squares. Tasty edible squares. However, we are well rounded people over here at Big Muddy and I'm gonna say it right out. These are not squares, they are rectangular prisms. Admit it, you were thinking it.

This object looks pretty three dimensional to me

The base of this ice cream is a sweet, complex caramel with a hint of salt.  As Madeline said in her review, it is nice we are seeing a return to normal caramel, and a shift away from salted caramel.

I thought the clusters were great. They were about the size of a penny and frequent enough to get about 2 per spoonful. Dark chocolate and caramel go so well together. The bitter/sweet combo of the chocolate played so nicely with the salty/sweet combo of the caramel. The oats added a bit of texture to the clusters, even if you couldn't quite taste them. In that way, they kind of reminded me of a Crunch bar. When you eat a Crunch bar you can't taste the crispy rice like you could if you were eating Rice Krispie's cereal, but they add nice texture. I'm surprised we don't see more oats in ice cream!

All in all, I enjoyed this ice cream a lot. I easily ate most of the pint in one sitting. Now I need to find my way to San Fransisco or Ireland!
