Edy's Salted Caramel Pretzel Frozen Custard

So far, I have only had one experience with Edy's relatively new Frozen Custard line and this experience was incredibly negative. However, plenty of ice cream bloggers out there, including Madeline, who disliked the Chocolate Malt custard flavor have enjoyed other offerings from this Edy's line.

I felt like this flavor was extra promising because of the salty sweet potentiality and its uniqueness! More ice cream companies should be making flavors with pretzels in them.

The description of this flavor on the Edy's website reads A perfect combination of sweet cream frozen custard, chocolaty covered pretzel pieces and a generous swirl of salted caramel.

I'm sure at this point you all know I am so totally over it with salted caramel flavors. And you would probably not expect a flavor from Edy's of all companies would get me to change my mind on this. Well, I loved this frozen custard. The main reason? The salted caramel wasn't the only salty component.

I think salted caramel when it stands alone, can be a bit overwhelming. However, in this flavor, there were a couple of elements mellowing the salted caramel out. First, the sweet cream base of this flavor was quite sweet. I think a lot of salted caramel flavors forget that sweet is half of what makes salty/sweet work so well. The second element was the salted caramel swirl was not the only salty aspect of this ice cream. This frozen custard was going for a whole salty/sweet ambience, not a drown-you-in-satled-caramel technique that is so popular right now. And frankly, the salted caramel swirl was super delicious. It was a darker, more complex caramel. At times the swirl was pretty thin, which was sad, but the spots where it was thicker, it was thick! Thick and gooey and delicious and a way higher quality than I would normally expect from Edy's. The chocolate covered pretzel pieces were da bomb. The pretzels were super crunchy and not one bit soggy! Again, the chocolate covering the pretzels was milky and sweet to provide a nice foil to the salty pretzels.

I found a pretzel that had fallen out of it's chocolate!

Lastly, the texture of this frozen custard is pretty good, but not out of this world. It is thicker and creamier than ice cream made by Edy's and competitors, but it doesn't have the smoothness and lack of air you get in Ted Drewes.

If you are looking for a cheaper and unique treat look no further than Edy's Salted Caramel Pretzel Frozen Custard.
