Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia
Dearest Readers,
We must apologize. Your trusted Big Muddy Ice Cream Blog has done you a grave disservice. Perhaps the gravest disservice known to man. We have not yet reviewed Ben and Jerry's iconic Cherry Garcia. Attached with this missive is a review of this ice cream in the hope that you subscribe to the 'better late than never' school of thought.
Sincerely, and with the deepest regrets,
The Big Muddy Ice Cream Blog
I actually don't know how this blog is over a year old and neither Lizzy nor I have reviewed Cherry Garcia. This is probably the first (maybe sometimes the only) flavor people think of when they think of Ben and Jerry's. It's seriously so famous. It's also way more delicious than I remember. It's described as
Cherry ice cream with cherries and fudge flakes.
This is a deceptively simple description, and the ice cream itself is so much more. Even though this ice cream exemplifies the chunk-tasticity of the Ben and Jerry's ouvre, which I usually associate with somewhat juvenile and fun flavors, this flavor is incredibly subtle and sophisticated.
The cherry base has a superb texture. It is incredibly thick, definitely on the thicker end for Ben and Jerry's flavors, and yet not hard. The cherry flavor is light, sweet, and pure. There is a sweet cream note that shines through, giving this a delicate cherries and cream flavor.
The cherry chunks are huge, usually about half of a cherry. They are also frequent in the pint. I got one approximately every other bite. Sometimes this would be a problem, but here it allowed me to experience the glory of the base flavor with no interference. The cherry chunks were succulent and juicy. They were, like the base, more sweet than tart, and added an intensity of flavor to the base.
The chocolate chunks were smaller than the cherry chunks and about as frequent. They were a drier, crunchy semi-sweet chocolate, which added some depth to both the flavor and texture.
Bottom line, this ice cream is superb. If you've never tried this flavor, go out and buy a pint.
