December Blizzard of the Month Candy Cane Oreo

Remember waaaaaay back at the end of summer I promised to try every Dairy Queen Blizzard of the month flavor? I bet you were worried when I didn't post a review of a Blizzard-of-the-month for the ENTIRE month of November.  I bet you were raging mad.  Because you have nothing better to do than obsessively read our ice cream blog.  Fear not, dear and loyal readers, the Blizzard-of-the-month for both November and December is Candy Cane Oreo, and I have a review for you today.  Also, this Blizzard fits in perfectly with the avalanche of peppermint flavors I'm reviewing this holiday season!

Long story short, this Blizzard was ok but not great.  Part of the issue was the spectacular September/October Pumpkin Pie Blizzard.  It cannot possibly be topped, so the next flavor was bound to be a disappointment.  Dairy Queen describes the Peppermint Candy Cane Blizzard as

The holidays have officially arrived at DQ.  The smooth mix of candy cane and OREO bits blended together with our famous creamy vanilla soft serve is sure to make this holiday season your sweetest one yet!

On my first bite of ice cream I got a delightful whiff of peppermint as well as a delightful taste and delicate crunch of candy cane bits.  Unfortunately, this was the only bite that stood out.  The candy cane chunks were so small that they didn't contribute much crunch to the ice cream, and flavors of the Oreo cookies and the vanilla soft-serve drowned out the candy cane taste.  The Oreo chunks were good (I mean, you can't go wrong with Oreo bits in vanilla ice cream) but there were not enough of them to make up for the lack of a strong peppermint flavor.

I remember getting a Candy Cane Blizzard (not Candy Cane Oreo) last year, and it was sickeningly sweet.  This year's offering was definitely a step up, but I really think Dairy Queen could do something to bring this flavor to the next level.  Maybe don't grind up the candy canes so small?  Really anything to give it more peppermint flavor.
