TCBY Mocha Almond Fudge

Oh boy this weekend was full of fun adventures and stressful adventures. Which means I am totally swamped with work for grad school. Which means I should spend my reviewing ice cream. Yep. Logic. I has it.

This weekend I flew to Bellingham, Washington to visit the Ducks (my aunt, uncle, and cousin) and run a trail race. (Yes this also means a review of everybody's favorite, quirky, West Coast ice cream shop, Mallard is coming soon!) I flew United, which was probably mistake number one, and both legs of my flight got majorly delayed. Long story short, I spent a long time in the Denver airport. Most of my Denver airport time has been spent in the terminal with the Ben & Jerry's, which I was not in this time. This terminal had a TCBY, a USwirl (a froyo placed owned by Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, the Iowa City version of this shop is called Aspen Leaf), and Haagen-Dazs. I haven't had TCBY before, and the race I was running the next day was sponsored by TCBY so I figured I would try some out. Also, TCBY stands for The Country's Best Yogurt so I definitely wanted to investigate. The TCBY had soft-serve froyo and what I assumed was hand scooped ice cream. However, from looking at the TCBY website, I think it might have been hand scooped froyo!

The hard scooped flavor offerings from TCBY were pretty standard, nothing too exciting. I decided on Mocha Almond Fudge.

This flavor was pretty good. The base was a sweet coffee flavor with a hint of chocolate. This froyo also didn't taste like it was missing the distinctive flavor fat. The almonds were halved and roasted so they added a nice crunch to the ice cream. They were also lightly salted. Overall, the almonds were my favorite part of this flavor. They weren't a ton of them in the froyo, about one every other bite. Lastly the fudge swirl. I appreciated that it was clearly a fudge swirl as opposed to a chocolate sauce. The texture was thicker, gooey, and viscous. Unfortunately there wasn't much of the swirl.

When I thought it was ice cream, the texture wasn't anything special. It was pretty creamy, with a lot of air, which gave it some pull. But knowing this was froyo, I was pretty impressed with the texture!

All in all, I enjoyed my frozen yogurt. I don't know if I would call it the country's best frozen yogurt, because I haven't tried a lot of non-soft-serve frozen yogurts to be able to make that call!
