October Dairy Queen Blizzard of the Month: Pumpkin Pie
If you remember way back in August, I vowed to review every Dairy Queen Blizzard of the Month Flavor. And yet .... and yet I didn't review the September flavor. You might think I broke my promise, but you would be wrong. Pumpkin Pie was the flavor for both September and October, so I decided to wait October to try it. October feels more like fall, and it's more fun to eat pumpkin when it feels like fall.
Holy Cow. If you only eat one pumpkin-themed item this fall, put this blizzard on the short list. It was amazing. This blizzard is described as
Pumpkin pie pieces blended with creamy vanilla soft serve, crowned with whipped topping and nutmeg.
This description is totally wrong. It's more like pumpkin pie filling, unbaked, straight from the can, blended with vanilla soft serve with small pieces of crust-like graham-ish pieces mixed in. Whatever. The mis-matched description didn't take away from my enjoyment of the treat.
I loved this flavor so much because you can really taste the pumpkin. Based on the orange, pumpkin-looking pieces left on the inside of the cup, I think DQ uses a pumpkin-substance that involves decent amounts of real pumpkin. So many 'pumpkin' desserts are heavy on the spice and light on the pumpkin, so it was refreshing to have something that tasted primarily like a pumpkin.
The graham mix-ins were less like graham crust or graham cracker in texture, and more like a dry, biscuit-like cookie. They were flat pieces, about 1/2in x 1/2in. Even thought they had the texture of a cookie, they tasted EXACTLY like cinnamon graham crackers. Oh man, those things were like crack when I was younger. Lightly sweet with a light cinnamon flavor. Perfection.
In addition to the cinnamon from the graham mix-ins, nutmeg sprinkled on the top of the treat added to the spice profile. I love nutmeg so much. It makes everything better. LITERALLY EVERYTHING. Spaghetti Sauce. Check. Blueberry Pie. Check. Hot Cider. Check. Athlete's Foot. Check. Just kidding I have no idea if nutmeg cures Athlete's foot!
