I Scream Cakes

Many of my St. Louis readers are probably looking at the title and thinking I've gone on some fabulous travel adventure and had a chance to stop at some wonderful little ice cream shop in some other state. Nope. Nope nope. I Scream Cakes is the hidden gem of Cherokee Street in South St. Louis. I had never heard of I Scream Cakes until this summer. I thought I knew all the best places to get my favorite food in my favorite city. So maybe it was that this bakery and ice cream shop just focused more on cake, and ice cream was more of a side venture. Or maybe their ice cream wasn't that good. There had to be some sort of explanation as to how this little shop had been flying under my radar.

Well after my sister and I visited yesterday, I can tell you the explanation has nothing to do with the quality of the ice cream. Or the quality of the service, for that matter. When Madeline and I walked into this brightly colored store, I, at least, was overwhelmed by the many intriguing flavors. However, our server was ready to save the day and encouraged us sample to sample three flavors, telling us all about each one. And I'm sure if Madeline and I had wanted to sample the whole shop, we would have been more than welcome to!

The cups and spoons were also compostable! How cool! :)

I decided to go with a scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip and Strawberry Lemon Basil, two dairy flavors, although I Scream Cakes has a wonderful selection of dairy free ice creams and sorbets. Once classic flavor, one crazy flavor. To start off, the chips in the Mint Chocolate Chip were very unique. Very thin sheets of chocolate must have been used to make these crumbly chips that were abundant throughout the ice cream. In fact, the texture of the ice cream could even be described as crumbly. It could have been from the chips, but I think it is because I Scream Cakes probably uses real mint leaves for flavoring. First, the ice cream tasted like they used real mint leaves and second, I could see little specks of brighter green that were probably the mint leaves in the paler green of the ice cream.

Now, the Strawberry Lemon Basil. I've had similar flavored sorbets and just didn't love them. The flavors were too tart and too intense for my liking. So I was intrigued that this was a real dairy ice cream flavor. And in my opinion, this flavor is PERFECT as an ice cream. It started out tasting like a strawberry lemonade smoothie and finished with a hint of the basil flavor. The flavors were strong, but not too tart or intense. The cream and milk really mellowed out the flavors and just made them blend together really well. If you're not normally a fan of crazy ice cream flavors, this might be a great place to start. Again, the texture was kind of almost crumbly and grainy, but as you can see below, it's because of real ingredients they use. Look at the strawberry chunks and the bits of basil leaves!! Yum.

With plenty of sorbets, vegan ice creams, and exotic flavors, I Scream Cakes is not for the faint of heart. But with high quality ingredients it is definitely worth the trip.
