Sweet Science Polar Plunge Peanut Butter

Sweet Science introduced Polar Plunge Peanut Butter in January as a collaboration with Buddy's Nut Butter and the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics.  Every pint purchased gave $1 to the Special Olympics.  What's better than a combination of ice cream, peanut butter, and good citizenship? Nothing.

I'm a month late to the game with this flavor, but that's never stopped me from eating and reviewing an ice cream.  This is described as

We're proudly partnering with the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Minnesota (SOMN) for a very special flavor and cause.  We made this flavor with help from our buds at Buddy's Nut Butter.  Rich peanut butter ice cream with chunks of chocolate ganach throughout.  Two kinds of pb, two kinds of chocolate, all kinds of delicious.

Whoa.  Both the chocolate and the peanut butter were almost bitter, but in the best way possible.  Ganache is made by pouring heated cream over chocolate, typically bittersweet chocolate.  Pure gluttony.  I could definitely tell this was ganache and not fudge or a plain chocolate swirl.  It had at the same time a more viscous and more liquid texture than a typical chocolate swirl.  (Like a goo!)  I could tell this was made with a very dark chocolate, mellowed out a bit by the cream.  It was the perfect complement to the peanut butter.

Hello, ganache!

The peanut butter base was good enough that it convinced me to try Buddy's Nut Butter itself.  The peanut butter base had a very vibrant, full, and fresh peanut flavor, and was more peanut-y than peanut butter-y.

Normally the peanut butter/chocolate combo reminds me of Reese's.  This combination did not.  The chocolate was so much darker and the peanut butter so much peanuttier that it was a whole different flavor profile than your typical PB/chocolate.

Because I can't get enough sugar, I made some OREO ice cream sandwiches with this because obviously, why wouldn't I?

In the spirit of full disclosure, this pint had just a hint of freezer burn.  I've also found this in a few other older Sweet Science pints I've tried.  Sweet Science uses all natural ingredients and no preservatives, so I'm not surprised that the ice cream ages faster.  Just heads up to try to buy seasonal or special Sweet Science pints when they are first released.
