Edy's Peanut Butter Pie Frozen Custard

I was obviously excited when Edy's announced they were making a new frozen custard line, but my experience with their chocolate malt flavor was less than stellar.  The flavor was not great, but the custardiness was good enough that I wanted to try another flavor.  On a recent trip to Target I picked up the Peanut Butter Pie flavor.  On Edy's website this is described as

A rich and creamy blend of sweet cream frozen custard with plenty of chocolate cookie pieces and peanut butter swirl in every bite.

This flavor was seriously SO much better than the chocolate malt flavor.  Actual peanut butter pie is already such a rich and creamy dessert that it really lends itself frozen custard formulation (even more than to ice cream formulation).

The first flavor I noticed was a very sweet peanut butter, reminiscent of peanut butter pie.  Imagine that!  I couldn't really tell that the base was sweet cream flavor, but this wasn't a bad thing.  Instead I think the peanut butter swirl flavor meshed with the sweet cream base flavor to create a wonderful sweet peanut butter flavor.

The custard was quite thick, creamy, and dense.  I really had to use some muscle to push my spoon through, especially while the custard was only a few minutes out of the freezer.  Most of the time when you have to work that hard to scoop ice cream it is a bad sign because it means the ice cream is hard and icy, but this time it was because it was so dense, but still remained creamy.

The chocolate cookie pieces were somewhere between oreo cookies and chocolate graham cracker crust.  As is typical with these type of cookie mix-ins they were just slightly soggy.  The peanut butter swirl was not super thick, so was more similar to small pieces of peanut butter instead of a swirl.  They were slightly hard and saltier than than the peanut butter flavor of the base.  This was a nice complement to the sweetness and thickness of the rest of the flavor.

I wished that the flavors of the chocolate cookie and the peanut butter swirl 'popped' more.  The custard stayed really cold, probably because of its density, and it was so thick, so the texture drowned out the flavor just a bit.  Otherwise, this was a great frozen custard offering, so much better than the chocolate malt flavor.  I'm excited to try the other offerings from this line.
