Missouri State Fair Ice Cream

This past weekend I went to the Missouri State Fair for the first time EVER! The fair is every year in Sedalia, Missouri, which is about an hour northwest of Eldon. The drive was all on rural highways by cute little towns and beautiful farms. The first places we saw were a handful of ice cream options at the state fair. There were some just soft serve places and one spot that said "homemade ice cream" in the general food section. But those spots looked like all the rest of the food booths offering turkey legs and funnel cakes and other standard fair food, that really isn't unique or exciting. So those spots were not the place for me. As we wandered around the fair some more we saw two spots that looked like good options. One was ice cream made by the Missouri Dairy Association and the other was ice cream made by Mizzou Agriculture Students. From another AmeriCorps member I had heard about Tiger Stripe ice cream made by Mizzou Agriculture Students, so I decided this was the place to get my ice cream at the Missouri State Fair. If you go to Mizzou or live near Columbia you can get this ice cream at Buck's.

At the fair they were offering chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, butter pecan, Tiger Stripe, and maybe one more that I can't remember. I, of course, chose to get Tiger Stripe, which is the flavor they are known for. It was $2.75 for one scoop, but the one scoop was HUUUGE! So quite a pretty good deal, especially considering jacked up state fair prices. Tiger Stripe Ice Cream, although you might not expect it from the appearance, is French Vanilla with a Dutch Chocolate Swirl. (How European!!) Honestly taste wise, this wasn't much more exciting than any other vanilla ice cream with a chocolate swirl. The swirl wasn't like a chocolate sauce or like a hard fudge. It was sort of a smooth and crumbly chocolate, and hard not liquidy. Although the taste wasn't spectacular, the texture was pretty unique. It was a very ice cream texture that pulled like taffy. I really love when the texture of an ice cream is like that, but is also still really rich and creamy. Good job Mizzou Students!

I want to go to Mizzou and get Buck's in the store. They don't have too many exciting flavor, but I am really intrigued by their Mizzou Gold flavor. Maybe it is something really exciting!
