Picco Ice Cream

Horray! It's time for the first ice cream of the New Year! And the first ice cream of the year had better be good, so after a quick Google search of "best ice cream in Boston," Brett and I headed off to Picco Pizza and Ice Cream for an afternoon treat.

Picco is a unique ice cream experience, because it is a restaurant, first and foremost. But you can come for only ice cream and sit at a table, sit at the bar, or take your ice cream to go. It was a too chilly that Sunday afternoon for a stroll with ice cream, so Brett and I sat at a table for our ice cream, instead of getting it to go.

Although there were options for floats, shakes, sundaes, and scoops, Brett and I both decided to order "the sampler," which allows you to try 3 flavors for $6.50! This would allow us to try almost half of the flavors available that day. And from looking at Picco's FaceBook page, they rotate flavors, note everyday, but quite frequently!

Brett ordered Mint Chip, Honey, and Dark Chocolate in his sampler, and I ordered Sesame Swirl, Malt Chip, and Cardamom.

My sampler, with Malt Chip in the back, Cardamom on the left, and Sesame Swirl on the right!

The first one I tried was the cardamom. Oh wow, this was a strongly flavored cardamom ice cream. However, because Cardamom is such a bright flavor, it blended in perfectly with the creamy ice cream. Then I tried the Sesame Swirl. I would describe this flavor as sesame ice cream with a sesame butter swirl. And how do I feel about this flavor? Screw peanut butter, I want to start buying sesame butter to put on toast! The sesame butter was rich, complex, and nutty, with a hint of sweetness and saltiness. The texture of the swirl was creamy and smooth, and there was enough swirl to make this flavor strong, but not overwhelming. Lastly, the Malt Chip was the most mellow of all the flavors Brett and I had. It was simply sweet cream ice cream with a hint of malt and dark chocolate flakes. For me, taking a bite of this flavor was a nice respite between bites of the intense Sesame Swirl and Cardamom.

I had a couple of bites of Brett's flavors and they were delicious as well. The Mint Chip was made with real mint leaves, not mint extract, and the flavor was strong! The honey was incredibly strongly flavored, intense, and complex. It was made with a dark honey and there were puddles of viscous, grainy honey throughout. Lastly, the dark chocolate was SO dark with lots of cocoa powder. Brett said it was almost gritty, but not in a bad way, and he even had cocoa powder coating the roof of his mouth after!

The intense, strong flavors of these ice creams blew me away! The texture of the ice cream was also perfectly creamy, and not too hard or too soft! If their pizza and pastas are as good as their ice cream, this place might be heaven on earth. If you're in the Boston area, you NEED to check out Picco!
