Talenti Raspberry Cheesecake
Raspberry Cheesecake was the second of two new-in-2015 Talenti flavors I found (for the first time!) recently. I really disliked Chocolate Cookie Dough, but thankfully, Raspberry Cheesecake was much better. This flavor is
Cheesecake: heavy. Cheesecake gelato: not heavy. There's some science in there somewhere, but all we know is, when we blend real pieces of raspberry cheesecake and sweet raspberry vinaigrette, we never want to eat our desserts on a plate again.
First impression: Wow, the base really tastes like cheese, but a mild cheese, so not offensively cheesy. Mmmm Cheese. We need more cheese in our desserts. As this gelato began to melt, it even smelled cheesy. This was a great cheesecake base, one of the best I've ever tasted. The mix-ins weren't overly bold, so the base was the starring element of this flavor.
The raspberry swirl was also quite good, but it was not thick enough or prevalent enough to thoroughly enjoy. The vinaigrette was a perfect blend of sweet and tart. I couldn't explicitly taste the balsamic vinegar used for the swirl, but I think it definitely helped prevent the sauce from becoming cloyingly sweet.
And now for the completely unexpected! The cheesecake chunks had a punch of lemon! This would not have been a surprise had I read the (incredibly long!) first, as the cheesecake includes lemon oil! (Note that the ingredients listed on my pint are different than those listed on the website, which do not list lemon oil but do include lime crystals.) The cheesecake came in small cubes, each a bit smaller than a standard die and I got at least one every other bite. They seemed to clump together a bit, as some bites had three or four cheesecake cubes stuck together. One face of each cube was covered in graham cracker crust, so it was like a mini-cheesecake in each bite.
Each element of this gelato was great, and if you can get the base, a cheesecake chunk and some swirl in the same bite it is a divine experience; the lemon, raspberry, and cheese blending together in perfect harmony. Unfortunately, the ratios for this flavor were off, making the perfectly-balanced bite all too rare. I really wanted more swirl!
