Lizzy's Homemade Ice Cream

First it was Izzy's ice cream in Minneapolis and now Lizzy's ice cream in the Boston area! People with names ending in "izzy" must just know what is up with ice cream.

This week, I visited my boyfriend, Brett, in Boston. For Christmas two years ago he got me a t-shirt from Lizzy's ice cream. I was like, "Sweet! I like ice cream and this is my name! How cool!! ...But I've never had their ice cream... How can I rep their brand without knowing if it's any good." So I've never worn the t-shirt out of the house. And now the day finally came for me to try the ice cream shop sharing my name.

Look at their adorable cow logo!

Before I left STL for Boston, I checked out their flavors online. Two jumped out at me right away: Grapenuts and Chocolate Orgy. Grapenuts are just such a lovely weird little cereal, but super healthy! I was excited to see how they would turn out in an ice cream. Although a description wasn't on the website, Chocolate Orgy is a flavor name that should speak for itself. I mean, there are only two things I love more than orgies: chocolate and my boyfriend.

Hahaha, get the joke?

Look! A wild Lizzy spotted in her natural habitat, an ice cream shop!

Welp, moving right along to the ice creams. When we get to the shop in Needham, MA, my expectations are obviously through the roof. The description of the Chocolate Orgy flavor is dark chocolate ice cream with chocolate chunks and I am shockingly underwhelmed. That's it? Dark chocolate ice cream with one type of chunk and no swirls or nothin' and you dare call it Chocolate Orgy?! I still got the flavor and really wanted to be proven wrong.

Was I? Kinda.  The ice cream was really good. It is a very hard ice cream, which I don't normally love, but Lizzy's pulls it off. The dark chocolate was dark, and the chunks were really high quality chocolate. Was it better than your standard chocolate ice cream? Definitely. Does it deserve the name Chocolate Orgy? I'm not so sure.
The Grapenuts flavor was also simple, but good. It tasted like you drowned Grapenuts in sweet cream, let them get a bit soggy and froze it. Normally very crunchy, the soft and chewy cereal bits mixed throughout a sweet cream with a touch of vanilla ice cream made you forget you were eating your dad's favorite health cereal. Yum.

Although Lizzy's didn't live up to my expectations, I want to give them another shot.  Brett, in classic New England Style, got a frappe, with Oreo and Mocha Chocolate Lace ice cream. I had one spoon full and the mocha ice cream tasted incredible and the Chocolate Lace was chocolate covered in caramelized sugar. Yum. They also sell, and seem to take a lot of pride in, coffee and espresso drinks, so next time I go I definitely want to get a coffee/mocha flavor.

Brett's frappe!
