New for 2017: Magnum Double Chocolate Hazelnut

I almost typed 'New for 1017' in the title. Throwing it back to the Middle Ages! In much more recent news, Lizzy and I are still working our way through the new 2017 flavors, and I have a review of a new Magnum bar: Double Chocolate Hazelnut described as

Chocolate hazelnut ice cream dipped in chocolatey coating, hazelnut sauce and milk chocolate.


Nutella is the ubiquitous chocolate/hazelnut combo, so I subconsciously expected biting into these bars to be like eating a spoonful of Nutella; however, they had a much different balance. The hazelnut sauce was the most notable element. It was thick and sticky and tasted like sweetened hazelnuts. In Nutella, the chocolate and hazelnut meld together to form a single flavor, but the hazelnut sauce lent the bars a hazelnut flavor distinct from the chocolate.

The chocolate shell was the typical dark-ish chocolate in other Magnum bar flavors. I didn't actually have too much trouble with the shell cracking and making a mess which has happened with other Magnum bars.


With the strong hazelnut flavor of the sauce and the strong chocolate flavor of the shell, the chocolate hazelnut ice cream faded into obscurity. It didn't really add much to the bar.

These bars were decent, and I really liked the hazelnut sauce, but the balance was off for me. I would have liked a stronger chocolate ice cream to stand up to the strong hazelnut sauce. I give these 🍦🍦.5/4 cones.
