Kemps Frozen Yogurt Shop Chocolate Hazelnut
While waiting (not so) patiently for new flavor releases, I decided to keep the Kemps frozen yogurt streak alive and bought Kemps Frozen Yogurt Shop Chocolate Hazelnut thinking it would be a delicious, Nutell-y delight. Chocolate Hazelnut is
Vanilla hazelnut frozen yogurt with chocolatey hazelnut swirl topped with chocolatey chunks and truffles.
I love Nutella second only to peanut butter. I survived an entire summer in Morocco on peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches on Moroccan bread for at least every other dinner. Did you know that in Morocco (and probably other countries) there are Nutella variations? I think the brand I bought is called Penotti. There's a hazelnut Penotti swirled with strawberry, a hazelnut Penotti swirled with vanilla, the list goes on.
Somehow, Kemps figured out a way to fuck up chocolate and hazelnut and they fucked it up in a big way. WHY, KEMPS WHY?
First, the base. Why, oh why would you make a vanilla hazelnut base for a flavor called chocolate hazelnut? VANILLA IS NEITHER CHOCOLATE NOR HAZELNUT. I would be willing to forgive this had the base tasted remotely like either vanilla or hazelnut, but it didn't; it tasted like maple candy. MAPLE CANDY IS NEITHER VANILLA NOR HAZELNUT NOR CHOCOLATE. Just .... how? Also, the texture of the base was somewhat spongy. Other Kemps frozen yogurts do not have this problem.
The chocolatey hazelnut swirl tasted like nothing. Just nothing. It had a wonderful gooey texture, but it had no taste. Just ... what?
The chocolate truffles and chocolate chunks were the only remotely good component of this flavor. The truffles were approximately 1/4'' tall. The outer shell was crunchy dark chocolate and they had a softer dark chocolate center. The chocolate chunks were basically the same as the truffle shells. The whole idea of the Frozen Yogurt Shop line is to have a frozen yogurt with topping as you would get in a frozen yogurt shop. This meant the truffles and chocolate chunks were only on the top of the flavor, so unless you scooped carefully or mixed in before scooping you could miss out on the mix-ins on the third or fourth bowl of frozen yogurt. This wasn't an issue with the previous Frozen Yogurt Shops flavors I've tried because those flavors were actually decent and didn't completely depend on the mix-ins; however the chocolate truffles and chunks were the only good parts of Chocolate Hazelnut.
I don't want to do it, but I feel obligate to give this š¦/4 cones. Sad face.
