Sam's Choice Cookie Butter

Guys. I liked speculoos cookies before they were cool, okay. I liked speculoos cookies before I even really knew what they were, and just knew them as the cookies you got on Delta flights.  Then Trader Joe's came along and made Speculoos Cookie Butter (which, btw, you can get Biscoff spread for way cheaper and it's the same thing).  Then Ben and Jerry's came along and made Spectacular Speculoos, their speculoos cookie core ice cream.  Now everybody and their uncle is on the speculoos train! And, you know what, I'm not even mad. MORE SPECULOOS FOR EVERYONE!

If you don't know what speculoos (sometimes English-ized as speculaas) is, you've probably been living under a rock and it's now time to emerge. Speculoos are a thin, buttery, crunchy, delicate shortbread cookie spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Sam's Choice Cookie Butter ice cream is based on speculoos cookies though they don't state that explicitly.  The ice cream is

Vanilla ice cream with cookie butter swirl and cookie bits.

Sam's Choice also states that the flavor is "made with sweet cookie bits," but, like, duh.

The vanilla base was warm, and served as a nice foundation for the spice of the cookie butter swirl and cookie pieces.  The flavor was not very complex, and not particularly strong.  I wouldn't want a hugely prominent vanilla bean flavor, as it would change the spice balance, but I could have used a little more punch from the base.

The cookie butter swirl was thick, but unfortunately not very prominent.  I had a large swirl toward the top of the pint and a large swirl toward the bottom. It was smooth and creamy; more similar to Trader Joe's Speculoos Cookie Butter and less similar to Ben and Jerry's speculoos cookie butter which has a distinctive crunch.  The swirl was lightly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, but was so thick that the flavor tended to get lost in the texture.

The cookie bits were spherical, approximately 1/4'' in diameter.  I got at least one in every bite and sometimes two or three.  While these were more strongly flavored than the swirl and did give the flavor the taste of speculoos, they had a slightly odd texture.  The bits were partially chewy and partially crunchy, which made them seem stale.  I'm not sure exactly what Sam's choice was going for here, but they should have stuck with either chewy or crunchy not some weird middle ground.

While this was not a bad flavor, it is also not Sam's Choice's most well-executed flavor.  There are definitely better speculoos ice creams out there, but I'm not sure if there are better cheap speculoos ice creams available (this costs about $2.99 for a pint).  I'm giving Cookie Butter šŸ¦šŸ¦.5/4 cones.
