Reader Request: Eldon Drive-In Banana Split
This one has been on my Eldon bucket list for a while now. I have heard from many people in Eldon that I had to get a Eldon Drive-In banana split and review it. I had also been told that if I get one of these I should split it with some one. Haha split a banana split. Ha. Ha.
However, I would never. Because I care about you guys, my Dearest Readers. I want to give you guys the most accurate picture of the full experience of the Eldon Drive-In banana split. And if that is me feeling like I am going to vom, or actually voming, than so be it. I would not be able to consider myself a respectable ice cream blogger if I didn't eat every last bite of this banana split. I wouldn't throughly be able to comment on the size if I didn't eat the whole thing. I was also pretty confident I could eat the whole thing no problemo. I ate a light dinner that night and I have years of ice cream eating experience to rely on. Trust in your training.
Granted, I think my friend Claire would have been a bit happier if we split a banana split, seeing as she left a decent amount of hers uneaten before she was unable to continue. I, however, persevered and ate the whole thing. I felt very accomplished.
Now to the sundae. There was a ton of ice cream. I definitely struggled with like the last 5 or so bites of this sundae, but didn't feel to nauseous after, which is really I think the perfect way to feel after eating an entire banana split. Also the sundae was less than $5!! However, there was also just as much, if not more, whipped cream than ice cream. I would have liked the ratio to be a bit higher on the ice cream, but there are worse things than lots of whipped cream.
I was pleased with the high amount of peanuts topping the sundae, but a little disappointed at the amount of sprinkles. I couldn't really tell they were there with everything else that was going on. The ice cream was just vanilla soft serve, so nothing terribly amazing, but you couldn't expect too much more from a place like Eldon Drive-In on the ice cream front. I guess they could have given you both chocolate and vanilla soft serve in the banana split, but that would have made it less classic. The banana was perfectly ripe and tasty, but it was wayy buried underneath everything and tough to find at first. I had a decent number of bites before I hit banana. It would be cool if they created the sundae and then put the split banana on the outside of everything of else, if you know what I mean. The sauces that this sundae featured were hot fudge, pineapple, and strawberry. There were real chunks of fruit (not fresh, but at least real) in both of the fruit sauces. The fruit sauces were a little too sugary for my taste, but that is a comment on fruit sundae topping sauces in general, not a specific knock on Eldon Drive-In. The fruit sauces were also separated from each other. There was pineapple on one half and strawberry on the other, with hot fudge over the top. I think I would have liked it a little more if they layered the fruit sauces. Oh well, that is really a minor point. The hot fudge was good, but I have definitely had thicker hot fudge sauces. This kind of border on just being normal chocolate sauce, not hot fudge. But it was still good. Last but not least there was not one, not two, but three maraschino cherries that topped this treat!

Too bad we don't have a banana for scale...

Would you like some sundae with your whipped cream?
