Sam's Choice Butterscotch Salted Chocolate Fudge
What in the what is wrong with me!? Why have I not tried this flavor until now!? I love butterscotch. I love it so much. I love butterscotch pudding. I love butterscotch candies. I love butterscotch topping. I can't think of anything else that is commonly butterscotch flavored, but if there were, I would love it. I hate when someone asks me what my favorite ice cream of all time is. I don't hate it because it's hard to decide. I hate it because my favorite ice cream ever is Scotchy Scotch Scotch, a limited edition, butterscotch flavor from Ben and Jerry's. I hate telling people about it because they can't get it any more. This flavor ended its run right before Lizzy and I started blogging, so I didn't get the chance to review it, but I credit it from taking my relationship with ice cream from a love to an obsession. I probably ate 15 pints of this ice cream. No joke. There were weeks when I ate 3 pints.
Since then, I've been on the hunt for a permanent replacement. I tried Three Twins Butterscotch Pecan. It was a decent ice cream, but it was a flavor full of lies. There was no butterscotch flavor to be tasted. I'd seen the Sam's Choice Butterscotch Salted Chocolate Fudge in the freezers at Wal-Mart a few times without picking it up, and now I could kick myself for that. I think passed by it because I was worried the salted chocolate fudge would somehow mar the butterscotch experience. I thought chocolate and butterscotch couldn't possibly go together. I am an idiot.
Butterscotch Salted Chocolate Fudge is
Butterscotch ice cream with thick salted chocolate fudge swirls.
The base tasted like butterscotch pudding, ice cream-ified. I have nothing else to say. I wrote and deleted about 15 sentences trying to describe the flavor of butterscotch. I came up with nothing satisfactory. I fail as an ice cream blogger.
Sam's Choice is incredibly serious about their swirl game. They are incredibly thick and the ice cream is always packaged so you see a large swirl the first time you remove the lid. This flavor was no exception, and in fact, was the thickest swirl I've seen yet.
When the ice cream was cold, the swirl was hard and crunchy, but still fudge-y. This meant that large sections broke off so it was hard to portion out the swirl into different bites. As the ice cream warmed up, the swirl got a bit softer, but not much.
Is it possible that I liked the swirl better than the base? It was a rich, dense fudge. The salt blended right in. Sometimes 'salted x' tastes like two separate flavors, but here they melded together nicely. The salt intensified the flavor of the chocolate and added depth to the overall flavor. It makes me think someone should cut to the chase and make a straight-up salted butterscotch flavor.
