Haagen-Dazs Pomegranate Swirl Gelato
I need to start shopping at a grocery store other than HyVee. Not that HyVee isn't fabulous, but I keep getting $1 off 2 pints of Haagen-Dazs coupons from them. Again, not that Haagen-Dazs isn't fabulous, but I need to branch out sometimes. But for the mean time, prepare yourselves for another onslaught of Haagen-Dazs reviews.
Pomegranate is one of those trendy foods. Like kale or quinoa. It is constructed as having health benefits so high it is almost magical, and all of a sudden Big Food industries decided to capitalize on this. Big marketing campaigns, jacking up the prices of these foods, and convincing the insecure American public of a food's health qualities and bam! you've got profit.
Okay, I'll stop anthropology-ing now. But for real, pomegranates had a big moment a few years ago. But unlike other foods having similar moments, pomegranates lend themselves quite well to desserts. However, I don't remember seeing tons of pomegranate desserts. Which is a shame, because pomegranates are tasty.
This gelato is described as A strikingly beautiful duo, Haagen-Dazs Pomegranate Swirl blends tart pomegranate gelato with elegant vanilla gelato, creating an exceptionally smooth indulgence that's light on your palate.
First impressions, this gelato is pretty. The white vanilla swirled with the pinkish purple of the pomegranate is visually pleasing. When Haagen Dazs swirls two flavors of frozen dessert together they are good at making them look pretty, and this is no exception. My first bite, I spooned some of the pomegranate and some of the vanilla. Tartness, sweetness, yum. Next, I grabbed a bite of the pomegranate on its own. It tasted quite tart, but also sweet and fruity. My first thought was this gelato was tasty enough on its own it didn't need the vanilla to mellow out the tartness. Then I grabbed a bite of the vanilla gelato on its own. It was sweet, but mostly strongly vanilla flavored. The sweetness was present to enhance the vanilla flavor, not hide it or replace it, as you find with lower quality vanilla. Then I had another bite of the two together. While, yes the pomegranate gelato could stand on its own, the whole experience was enhanced by the vanilla. The sweet and creamy of the vanilla enhanced the tart fruity pomegranate and vice versa.
While Haagen Dazs gelato isn't as slick as Talenti, it is definitely smoother and a bit softer than their ice cream. The smoothness is enhanced when the gelato melts around the edges, making it fun to eat, in addition to being super tasty. If you don't want to eat a lot of gelato in one sitting, serve this product to yourself in a bowl or have a lot of restraint. I barely managed to make this last me two days.
The Haagen-Dazs gelato line continues to impress me. Even if you are a die-hard Talenti fan, Haagen-Dazs gelato is worth checking out!
