Kemp's Limited Edition Cherry and Spoon and You Betcha Berry

Today I've got a double review of some Kemp's limited edition flavors. Kemp's is a dairy company based in Minnesota and recently released a line-up of four Minnesota-inspired ice creams.  Sadly, I went to the store a few days ago and didn't see them, but you may still be able to find them. I bought 2 out of the 4 flavors in mid-October which must have been pretty close to the end of their run at my local Cub Foods.

I picked up the two fruity flavors: Cherry and Spoon and You Betcha Berry.

Cherry and Spoon is vanilla ice cream, cherries and brownie bites with swirls of chocolaty fudge. So you might be wondering, 'What the heck is the deal with the name Cherry and Spoon?' Spoonbridge and Cherry is a sculpture at the Walker Garden that has somehow become the Minneapolis image on all Minneapolis promotional material (like the arch is for St. Louis, or the Golden Gate Bridge is for San Francisco). I don't really get it, though. It's just one sculpture out of many at the Sculpture Gardens and not really a monument or tourist attraction in its own right. However nonsensical, it is a Minneapolis thing, so of course a Minneapolis-themed ice cream line would include a cherry flavor.

You Betcha Berry is Tahitian vanilla ice cream, blueberries and pound cake with raspberry swirl.  This, of course, is named in honor of the famous Minnesota accent (cf. the movie or TV Series Fargo).

Both flavors had a very light and airy texture, and would have benefitted from a thicker, creamier texture. I got an interesting tip via Instagram that repacking airy ice cream into a new container often helps with the texture.

I found it slightly odd that Cherry and Spoon was described as vanilla ice cream with cherries and You Betcha Berry as vanilla ice cream with blueberries. Cherry and Spoon definitely had a cherry ice cream base and You Betcha Berry definitely had a blueberry ice cream base.

Saddest mix-ins you've ever seen?

Blueberry ice cream is hard to execute, but Kemp's did it well. The base tasted exactly like blueberries, albeit blueberries drenched in cream, but who's going to complain about that? Similarly, Cherry and Spoon's base tasted exactly like a sweet cherry. Both base flavors faded a bit as I ate the ice cream, but overall they were executed quite well.

The brownie bites in Cherry and Spoon were phenomenal; large, fudgey, and perfectly chewy. I would have been happy with twice as many as I got - about one every three bites.  In You Betcha Berry, the pound cake scattered on top of the ice cream, and there weren't any pieces throughout the rest of the container. Honestly, this was ok. The pound cake was a touch too dense and much too dry.

Ooooh, see that swirl, watch that scene .... Sorry, I couldn't help myself

The fudge swirl in Cherry and Spoon was unremarkable, but also didn't detract from the flavor. The raspberry swirl in You Betcha Berry was phenomenal. Typically a strong raspberry swirl would drown out a blueberry base, but since the base was so well executed it held its own against the swirl and it really was a berry medley!

I'm rating both flavors šŸ¦šŸ¦.5/4. With more fudge pieces and a better texture, Cherry and Spoon would rival Cherry Garcia, and with a better texture, the blueberry base of You Betcha Berry would be the best I've ever tried.
