LA Ice Cream Adventures Part 2: LA Ice Cream Lab

For the second day of my LA adventure I was hanging out with my friend Katy in Little Tokyo where her boyfriend, Tom, lives. Our plan was to go to a nearby branch of the LA modern art museum and then get ice cream somewhere. As we went out for our morning run, we walked around the other side of Tom's apartment building and discovered that he lived above an LA Ice Cream Lab spot!! It can't get more convenient than that!

LA Ice Cream Lab is a liquid nitrogen ice cream place, kind of like Ices Plain & Fancy in St. Louis. At these places, they make, aka freeze with liquid nitrogen, your ice cream right in front of you in individual servings.

She's making my ice cream!

The menu at LA Ice Cream Lab was short. They had vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and cookies and cream which I think you can get year round. They also had three fancier flavors (which I think rotate) which were Blue Velvet, Salt Lick Crunch, and Banilla (banana and vanilla wafers). Then they had a season menu with chocolate and vanilla vegan options and Cafe Con Leche, Mint Chip, and Movie Time. Movie Time, described as Caramel base + popcorn & chocolate sauce, looked the most unique and fun, so I ordered that!

One of the best parts of this treat was the appearance. It was very cute with the chocolate sauce on top and two perfectly positioned pieces of caramel corn. At first I was a bit bummed that the chocolate was only on top, but it ended up being the perfect amount.

The base was a very sweet, sugary caramel, as opposed to buttery, and I enjoyed it. It was also super smooth and creamy, which is why liquid nitrogen ice cream is so special. Since the base was so enjoyable and stood well on its own, it was okay to have some bites with the chocolate, some without. The best part about this treat was the popcorn. They used caramel corn and put it directly in the base. There were tones of pieces that added crunch and extra crunchy sugar pieces.

Look at all the popcorn in the ice cream!

All in all, this treat was super fun and sweet. But at $5.50 it wasn't necessarily anything to go crazy over. And I would say that Ices Plain & Fancy is better! šŸ¦šŸ¦.5/4 cones! I am also now declaring 2.5 cones to mean, I would buy it again if it were a bit cheaper!
